Develop a strong mindset

Why do bad things always happen to me? I often hear this said when bad things happen. Why Me? The reality is, why not you?

Life happens, and I know that sounds harsh but it’s the truth.

I speak from experience. Life has thrown me some cruel hands over the years. There have been times when I thought I wouldn’t get through the day. However, I’ve also learnt that we are much stronger than we think we are.

Honour the struggle

When I was training at High Performance Academy with the World’s No 1 Coach Brendon Burchard in California, he introduced a phrase – ‘Honour the Struggle’.

At first, I thought this was a crazy idea. How can you honour something that is giving you pain? But then I realised that it’s in the struggle that you become stronger. It makes you a better person.

It was here that I also heard the phrase, ‘Good days will come again.’ Sometimes we are so focussed on the things that are going wrong in our lives that we forget about the good days. When I first heard this phrase, it gave me hope. And sometimes a little bit of hope is all we need to get moving in the right direction.

Nothing is permanent

When life happens to me now, I go through the same emotions as the next person – disappointment, frustration, even anger – but it quickly subsides when I focus on the good things in my life. I also know that I can deal with anything life throws at me because I have developed a strong mind and heathy, positive mindset habits to get me through the day, weeks, or months ahead.

Think of a time that was difficult for you. At the time you think ‘how am I going to get through this?’ – but you do.

Nothing is permanent, and that goes for good times as well as the bad.

Tips for tough times

So how do you get through the tough times? Here are just a few of the techniques I share with my clients.

You are what you focus on. If you focus on what isn’t going well, then you will see nothing else. Look for the positives. The smallest of things. There is always something. By practising this daily routine, you are retraining your mind to look at the positives and this helps you through those tough days.

Journal the small wins. Writing down the small steps you have taken, or positive affirmations will support you in looking at the world with a new perspective. Practise this daily and within a few days you will start to notice a difference. Keep your journal close so you remember to take the time to write the wins down.

Small steps

Take small steps, one day at a time. Focus on what you can control today. You may not be able to control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond. You are the one in charge of what you think, so try to keep control of your emotions and don’t let them overtake how you react. It’s important to understand that your feelings aren’t facts.

And as always, reach out for help. Don’t struggle on your own. It’s okay to ask for help – and it shows strength and courage when you do.

How to be productive with your time

The clocks have gone back but you can still spring forward. Whoop! How much do we love this extra hour today. I don’t know about you but I love it. We get so much more completed and I get extra time for me, fun time with the family, catch up on chores and I’m left feeling great.
